Gunpowder: Alchemy, Bombards, and Pyrotechnics: The History of the Explosive that Changed the World By: Jack Kelly “This violent reaction, a product of inner oxygen, is man’s fire, concocted, singular, unquenchable. It does not exist anywhere in nature. It is “artificial fire”—feu d’artifice, fuegos artificiales—terms for what in English we call fireworks, pyrotechnics. Its embodiment is gunpowder.” - Jack Kelly

Gunpowder has drastically been affecting the course of history for centuries, it permanently altered the way people wage war, brought a close to the Medieval Age, and made the Age of Exploration possible. Guns have also affected culture as well, as pyrotechnics have become important in everyday life. Jack Kelly's novel explores the history of gunpowder and it's impact on history as a whole. Gunpowder shows how guns have become so popular and how they have become instrumental shapers of the modern world.
